*points* Did you see the spoiler warning? If you did't see 5.16 and you're a spoiler phobe come no further.

This isn't really a *review* as such, but more of a mini-venting session.

So,I just watched Supernatural 5.16 "The Dark Side of the Moon," an episode I thought I'd hate. I mean, come on Sam just did three EPISODES ago! Then again, I really thought I'd hate 3.11 "Mystery Spot." Goes to show I can be rather a bad judge of what's actually going to be good or not.

Well, as usual, I'm not so sure I'm thrilled about the ambiguous ending. Sammy, you'd damn well better have pulled that amulet out of the trash can. And Cas? I get that you're not entirely human and everything, but frak you for saying it's worthless. It's the symbol of the one thing that just might be able to save the universe.

On the other hand, the writers have finally kind of, sort of, started to actually articulate what's going on with Dean. He's been falling apart for a while (since he went to hell almost two seasons ago) and his foundaton was never very strong to begin with. But this episode finally starts to make sense of what's going on with Dean. (If they'd been a wee bit more articulate earlier this *muzziness* could have been avoided.) See, there was a while there where it really sounded like Dean was begining to actually believe himself and believe *in* himself. And then two episodes ago, at the ending of 5.14 "My Bloody Valentine," Dean is desperate and praying and actually listening to Famine? I didn't quite buy it. We were missing smething. But now it's clear Dean's apparent character development was all window dressing and never really went deeper than the facade he was putting on to try to "cheer up" Bobby.

Dean's strength has always come from how he idealizes family (yes, duh, we all knew that), and that's why he never runs away and why he alway defends everyone he loves. But ever since he lost faith in himself (by torturing souls in Hell, of course; the perfect way to break someone who already thinks they're worthless) and lost faith in Sam (it's rebuilding, but since Sam keeps running away and choosing other people over Dean... and Dean doesn't have faith in himself... there's nothing to solidify it, to restore the confidence Dean had; Sam, rather than being his own man, Dean still views as his responsibility and Sam's downfall, his failure). So, Dean, who's alays believed what he can see with his own eyes. Has all these feelings of despair and hollowness, emptiness, failure, worthlessness, and then he meets Famine who tells Dean he's almost soulless and hollow and worthless, and he's got "objective proof" (in Dean's mind anyway) to back it up--after all, Dean clearly *is* immune, and Famine is telling him it's all because Dean's worthless? Of course Dean's going to listen.

So now after 5.16, we've got absent, doesn't-give-a-shit God; pissed-off, disillusioned Cas (whose human emotions appear to be stuck in the teenage years to boot); and heart-broken, run-down, given-up, self-esteem-lacking Dean. Only Sam (who woulda guessed that) is actually starting to understand the strategy--the only thing that might actually save humanity is if Dean and Sam fight back together. Only now Sam's gotta get Dean on board. Let's hope he started by pulling the amulet out of the trash so he can give it to Dean all over again.

Yeah, they've been saying that Sam and Dean were going through a role reversal for years, but I feel like this is the episode where we finally see Sam coming full-circle.

I also loved Sam's complete incredulity at being in Heaven. Dean was just surprised (not that he *shoud* be, but after hell, and well it being DEAN, the suprise was to be expected), but Sam? Yeah, I was completely LOLing at his whole WTF moment. :)

I get where Cas is coming from, and to be fair, I don't think he knows the history of the amulet, nor does he quite get all the intricacies of human interactions and all that. :)
