Hunters of the Dark Side (Author's Notes)

Special Thanks

Special Thanks to Carlos for the wonderful beta, storyline advice, troubleshooting, etc.  I never would have written this fic (let alone finished it) without you!!  I really hope you enjoy the finished product!  Thank you!

Thanks to calamitycrow for the encouragement, proofing, enthusiasm, and reassurance that I could do this!  Every time I doubted myself or started to dispair, you were a great cheerleader and so, so helpful with finding my silly typos, posting mishaps, etc.  Thank you!

Super-duper-fabulous thanks to xtinethepirate  and ashlan for their wonderful art and patience!!  I am so impressed and wowed by what you guys have done!  I only hope the story lives up to the awsomeness of your art!!

Many of the Star Wars concepts used for this retelling of Supernatural are from the Star Wars expanded universe, especially the works of Barbara Hambly, Timothy Zahn, Michael Stackpole, and Kevin J. Anderson.  If you liked this, you might like their Star Wars books (especially since they're much better written!!).

Character Notes

To fit with the universe, the names of some characters have been changed or modified.  The following is a list of Characters from the Supernatural 'Verse that have been renamed for purposes of this story:

Character                                                                  Hunters of the Dark Side Name
Azazel/The YED.......................................................Darth Azazel
Sam's Friend (from the "Pilot").............................Ven
Missouri Moseley......................................................Miss'Ouri Ot'Kla

Metalicar...................................................................Iriaz Dream / S8V1 (aka Chevy)
Truckzilla..................................................................Hunter's Folly

Star Wars Terminology and Resources

Much of the research from this fic was done though Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki.  You can find more information (and pictures) on any of the aliens, planets, terminology or languages used in this fic.  I am also happy to answer your questions.  I'm a geek and sometimes I geek out on authenticity. :)  Here's a list of some of the common, but maybe not super-obvious terms I've used.  If you see any others that you would like to have defined up front, please let me know!

Hunters of the Dark Side Term                            Meaning
Refresher, 'fresher.................................................Bathroom
Holocube.................................................................Photograph
Holonet....................................................................Internet
Slicer, slice, slicing...............................................Hacker, hack, hacking

Holo[anything]........................................................Video[anything]
Flimsi, flimsiplast..................................................Paper
Basic........................................................................English (more or less)
Sith...........................................................................A specific Dark Side order

Meta (or some background and thoughts on this story that you don't really need to read)

This story originated from the idea of "what would Sam and Dean really be like if they were in the Star Wars universe?"  Kripke has said that Supernatural is "Star Wars in Truck Stop America," but that got me thinking, what would hunting look like in the Star Wars universe? How would that work? Who or what would Azazel be? How would the story be the same or different?

The more I thought about it, the more interested I was, so I started sketching out an outline for retelling the entire Supernatural storyline.  Then, I realized that was far too long for one book, so I broke it in to three, but that didn't quite work, so I tried it as a duology.  The first part became Hunters of the Dark Side, and the second part is the as-yet untiled sequel that is currently a WIP, which I hope to have completed and posted up sometime this coming Fall. (That's assuming people like this and want to read more! *crosses fingers*)

It turned out some things were easy.  Sith really do have yellow eyes in Star Wars canon.  Jedi (and Sith) can sometimes separate their souls from their bodies and can possess other beings, computers, ships, droids, etc.  Jedi (and Sith) do sometimes hang around as ghosts, and there are lots and lots of canonical hauntings in the Star Wars universe.

Other concepts were really hard to translate.   Take the Metalicar for instance.  I figured a starship would be the best analogy, since starships are the vehicle of choice and you can actually live in them, but I wanted to get the name Chevy or Impala into the fic, and couldn't figure out how to do that.  The solution?  Split her into two different "characters": the Iriaz Dream, a starship named after a gazelle-like (impala-like) animal, and Chevy, a droid whose designation S8V1 got bastardized to "Chevy" by little Sammy.

Then there is the matter of time period and setting.  How to pick planets and species and locations in a completely different universe, especially when the significance or topography of those places may not be readily aparent to the reader?  When I thought about writing this for the BigBang then came the problem of how to tell Supernatural in the Star Wars universe without it being a crossover... so, I picked a less-talked about time period in the Star Wars 'verse and made sure to keep any recognizable, known characters out of the Winchesters' paths.  I hope I have succeeded.

The end result... I hope it works. There are parts of this I love and had fun writing.  There are other parts that are probably too repetetive or that just don't flow the way I'd like, that if I had 100 more hours to work on this I would delete or tighten up or rework.  I hope you enjoy it too.

Thank you for reading!!

It was fabulous working on this with you, darling! I'm bookmarking the fic to re-read later, to see everything you ended up doing with it. :DDD I hadn't known Kripke'd compared it to SW himself -- that's really interesting!

Again, loved the opportunity to combine two of my fandom loves into one place. :D! *smish*

And thank you for the wonderful cover art!! I love how you captured both the Star Wars and Supernatural "vibes" with it. And I was totally noticing how much Sam really does have Episode IV Luke Skywalker hair.

Kripke has compared Sam and Dean to Han and Luke, which is cool, but I actually see Sam as tracking closer to Anakin and Dean being more like Luke, at least the way the story's gone the last few Seasons.

Anyway, it was a *lot* of fun to get to play in two of my favorite fandoms at the same time (without doing an actual crossover), and I am really, really thrilled with the art you did!!

Oh, and the story has grown and filled in a lot since the draft I sent out for art, so I do hope you get to come back and re-read it later!! Let me know what you think!!

Thanks again! :D

This was so fantastic that I cannot even begin to put the words together to tell you how impressed I am with the sheer talent and skill displayed here.
I am utterly invested in this world, the character voices and tone just stunned me. It is 10am here I began reading this at about 11pm then decided to bookmark and go to bed. After a few hours of tossing and turning I gave up on sleep and got back to the screen to see what happened next.
Thank you so much for this gift.B.

Re: gratefuly stunned
Wow, thank you very much for the generous compliment. I'm just playing with lots of great ideas, concepts, scenarios, and characters that were already created in the Star Wars and Supernatural 'verses, so I'm not so sure I can take credit. I am really glad you enjoyed how this came together and found it suspenseful enough that you stayed up all night reading it!

Thank you so much for reading and for your thoughtful comment and feedback. It's really good to know that this worked, because there were a whole lot of times I was running around tearing my hair out and moaning that I was never going to get it done.

Thank you again!! :D

Hi! What a cool concept. I love Star Wars and I LOVE Supernatural so I can't wait to see how you ran with this. I just copied the whole thing to word and saved it to my jump drive for home perusal. After I read it I'll be back to leave feedback!

This was seriously some awesome work. I loved how you melded the SPN characters into the Star Wars universe, without losing any of the things we all love about both.

I'm really hoping you'll continue writing in this universe. Really, really hoping. :)

I've had this window open pretty much all day long debating if I'm crazy enough to start reading a 110K words fic on the week my finals are due in.
It looks like I am indeed that insane.
The premises of your fic sound absolutely intriguing and even though I'm usually a slash reader I cannot resist the temptation to read your story :)
I shall pop in again once I'm done to let you know how many hours sleep I missed because of it :)

Thank you so much for reading!!:D I hope it's worth your while.

I wrote this whie I was studying for the Bar Exam (crazy, but I passed, so it was all good--actually writing this was keepin me from going crazy with all the studying), so I'm sure you'll do fine with your finals while reading this. Best of luck!!

The sequel to this fic is in progress, and I hope to have it completed and posted at some point before the end of the year. So if you like this, be sure to keep an eye out for the sequel. Thanks so much again for reading!! :D

How in the blue blazes of hell did I ever miss this!!!!!

I cant describe just how epicly awesome a job you have done here. I can just share what my room mate said about my raving over it - "you have the best fandom!"

That I do. And authors like you are what make it so!

*runs off to read the sequel*

Aw, thank you so much, and thank you to your roommate too!

You probably missed it because when I wrote it, I posted it to my LJ and the spn_j2_bigbang comm and no where else for over a year. (I was studying for the bar and had no time!) The sequel was posted lots of places, but I posted it through the deancasbigbang, so it didn't get quite so much exposure. I'm *so* glad you found it now because I *just* posted the epilogue to the sequel (another 20k words!) yesterday. I really hope you'll take the oppotunity to read (and enjoy) that story too! Thanks again!
